Child Tax Credit allows families to benefit from a $2,038 Child Tax Credit for each child
under the age of 18 at the end of 2008.
Children’s Fitness Amount is a non-refundable credit worth up to $500 for children
under the age of 16 enrolled in an eligible program of physical activity.
Pension Income Splitting allows pensioners to split up to half of their eligible pension
income with a spouse or common-law partner. Income splitting will allow some
pensioners to take advantage of a significant tax break.
The age limit for RRSPs is raised to 71 from 69.
Transit Pass Credit rules were expanded to include new electronic fare products and
weekly passes purchased covering at least 20 days in a 4-week period.
Registered Education Saving Plans (RESPs) rules have changed. Designed to help save
for a child’s post-secondary education, you can now contribute up to $50,000 over the
child’s lifetime with no annual limits.
Home Buyer’s Plan (HBP) changed to allow a non-taxable withdrawal of $25,000
towards the purchase of a home – up from $20,000. First time home buyers can also
claim a new tax credit of up to $5,000 for their new home which will mean about $750 in
New Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) is being introduced to help families
save for the financial security of a disabled family member.
New Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) allows taxpayers 18 years of age or older to
contribute up to $5,000 per year.
New Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) will provide existing homeowners with a
15 per cent tax credit on eligible home renovations in excess of $1,000 and up to $10,000.
